Horizon Pollution

The cluttering of the Dutch landscape is one of the priorities of the Dutch Ministry of Health, Planning and Environment (VROM). The Ministry has so far only considered the day situation. But at night our country also makes a cluttered impression in many places. From almost every location in the Netherlands many light sources can be seen in the distance, which gives the landscape a cluttered look.
What lights you can see depends on the strength of a light source and its horizontal radiation. It also depends on the number of obstacles between the observer and the light source.

Method
Sotto le Stelle has developed a method which enables us to assess open landscapes in this respect. Pictures are made of the entire horizon. These pictures are then used to make a map containing all light sources. In this way municipalities know which light sources clutter the landscape most.

Fisheye
Photography with fisheye lenses and panoramic photography are excellent resources to describe and analyze the territory of an open landscape. To improve Sotto’s work, we are currently developing a method to calibrate our all-sky pictures.
